Hey, a thief! |
It is easy to become a “thief,” at least in the Japanese context. When one hears the word “dorobou” (a thief in Japanese), an image pops up to one’s mind: a mustache and beard (grown, but not too long), a cloth covering his head and face (as the stereotypical image of a thief is almost always male), and an arabesque patterned wrapping cloth (to carry his takings).
Obviously, a real thief would not dress like that; however, anyone who sees a person dressed up in such a way would think, “Hey, there’s a thief!” This demonstrates the power that the visuals have in general. But at the same time, I do not think any other visuals are as strongly associated with one single image as this one. Awesome. |
